Donnerstag, 11:30 - 13:00
Raum: BI 85.1
ab 12.04.2012

This course focuses on the changes in grammar, lexicology, and pragmatics which have occurred in the history of the mass media; the linguistic phenomena will be connected with cultural, political, and social history and with technological innovations of the media. We will start with the period of Early Modern English and end with the language in the internet. Examples will be taken from various media text formats (news papers, magazines), text types (reports, interviews, commentaries, advertising, TV series, etc. ), and media formats (print, radio, TV, new digital media). Linguistic changes found in everyday language and life and perhaps promoted through the media of daily use will also be discussed.

Bereich "Literature and Media":

Lucia Krämer
SE TU [ Fan Fiction
Dienstag, 11:30 - 13:00
Raum: BI 80, Raum 303/304 PCS
ab 10.04.2012

Fan fiction had been around for decades in the shape of fan magazines before its quantity exploded with the rise of web 2.0. In this course we will discuss, problematise and theorise the defining features of the genre based on texts relating to a variety of fandoms (e.g. Jane Austen, the Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings franchises). We will engage with structural features of fan fiction, such as genre, seriality and intertextuality, as well as with ideological questions relating to, for example, gender and the status of fan fiction in the literary system. This course is not designed as an introduction to the phenomenon of fan fiction, so if you want to participate, you should have some basic prior knowledge of fan fiction either as a reader or creator of fanfics.

The number of participants is limited to 20.

Bereich "Literature and Media":

Rüdiger Heinze
SE TU [ Remakes
Montag, 18:30 - 20:00
Raum: BI 84.1
ab 16.04.2012

At any given point, one third or more of the movies produced and/or running in the cinemas are remakes of older movies. This provides a unique vantage point for looking at the divergent versions and their particular realization (e.g. in terms of narrative, discourse, characters, conflicts, etc.) as well as their respective cultural and historical contexts. Since many of these movies are also adaptations, they additionally beg the issue of transmediality and, on occasion, transculturality. The course will be accompanied by screenings of the movies. Caveat: this course is not an introduction to film! That means that you should either have already taken a film course or have read an introduction to film. This will be tested at the beginning of class. Also, make sure to regularly check Stud.IP before the course starts, as material will be placed there for preparation.

Primärliteratur:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956, 1978, 2007).The Manchurian Candidate (1962, 2004). Further films will be announced in class.
Sekundärliteratur:
Basic material will be placed on Stud.IP well in advance of the course; further texts will be announced in class.
